The Masterbuilt Electric Smoker is the best option for anyone to start making great smoked food and it makes a perfect gift for the BBQ lover in your life. Below I show you some pictures of the food I've made and lay out specific reasons why this smoker is a great choice.
All it took was one taste of a smoked whole chicken my neighbor brought to a block party. It was the best chicken I'd ever had; moist and full of flavor all the way through. I asked him ALOT of questions in between bites. A few weeks later he was kind enough to let me borrow his smoker to try my hand at it. I asked a few more questions, made some ribs and they came out pretty good for my first try...I was hooked.
Smoking meat is a great thing to know how to do. When you start smoking ribs, wings, pulled pork, loin, turkey, side dishes or the vaunted brisket, you join a community of people who love to share ideas, tips, pictures and samples. The other great thing about smoking meat, is the time it takes to both learn the craft and complete the cook. Things that take preparation, effort, experience and time are the most rewarding. I find the entire process thoroughly enjoyable. Getting something rubbed or in the brine the night before, rising early the next morning to get the smoker set up and ready...filling the tray with chips and waiting for the smoke to come bellowing from the vent while catching that first whiff of burning hickory, applewood or mesquite...adding the meat to the rack, closing the door and enjoying the aromas as they fill the air around the farm before finally taking the meat off the racks, preparing it and serving it to excited visitors. These will be some of my greatest memories as a father and friend, arriving from the shop with wonderful smelling, great looking cuts of meat for everyone to enjoy. One of my favorite hobbies and something that makes me feel connected to the old way of doing things, like a cowboy on the open range (or something like that).
This thing is plug and play. The Masterbuilt Electric Smoker is a unit that you can truly set and forget. With it's plug and play operation and digital interface, you just set the temperature and time and just check back every-so-often to fill it with wood chips. No propane, lump charcoal or temperature to manage. Some veteran smokers would say electric smokers, including automated pellet grills, all fall under the category of cheating. What matters the most to me, however, is that I can get consistent results and serve great food without having to babysit the meat. Many people have messaged me about the fact that I'm usually wearing my tool belt in my instagram posts about smoking meat, this is because most days when I have something in the smoker, I'm out working on the farm, inside working on the house or somewhere playing with the kids! This is life at crushlife acres, we got stuff to do out here!
The Masterbuilt Electric Smoker is also small and easy to store. It is the same size as a mini-fridge. You don't have to keep it on your patio, you can put it up on a shelf or tuck it away when you need to and bring it out when you're ready to make a great recipe. I have my Weber gas grill on the front porch for burgers, steaks or kababs, and when I want to smoke something, I just pull the Masterbuilt Electric Smoker down and set it up down at my shop. If you look at pellet grills or traditional horizontal smokers, they are much larger and can't be tucked away.
The Masterbuilt Electric Smoker gives you a lot of bang for your buck, its a great value. This thing was so cheap I received from a Secret Santa! That being said, the price has climbed on Amazon since I received it. It was in the $130 range, now it's closer to $200 and still a good deal at that price when you compare it to what you'd pay for a name-brand pellet grill. If you'd like to stay closer to $130, the Smoke Hollow Electric Smoker is linked below and it wouldn't surprise me if it is manufactured in the same facility as the Masterbuilt. The only difference between the 2 units is that you have to open the door to add chips to the Smoke Hollow, where you can use the chip tray on the Masterbuilt. This is not a big deal either way, you'll lose some heat but you'll survive.
Okay now, you've been searching for a great gift or someone told you they wanted a smoker or maybe you are ready to start smoking meat but you want to enter the game with a good beginner model. The Masterbuilt model I have:
The even more affordable Smoke Hollow:
Both of these smokers are big enough to do 4 racks of ribs, 6-8 chickens, a whole turkey, big trays of beans, mac n' cheese or anything else you want to fill it with. Lots of room, great results and consistent performance for $120-$200. These things will last too! Look at the reviews these and its easy to see they are quality machines.
I've now had my Masterbuilt Electric Smoker for 2 years. My wife loves picking up cuts for me to smoke when we're having people over, the kids love everything that comes out of it and I've had a ton of fun honing my craft and perfecting (some of) my recipes. I'm not the authority on smoking by any means, but I hold my own and I have get real jacked up whenever it's my turn to provide a meaty menu item for family and friends.
If you know somebody who loves eating and cooking BBQ, the Masterbuilt Electric Smoker or alternative linked below is a great way for them to take their BBQ skills to the next level. As I talked about above, its ease of use, compact size, overall value and durability make it a great gift. If you have any more questions you contact me at Steve@mortport.com.
